Illustration and Visual Narrative / Task 3

Digital Triptych

While I was working on thinking of a story for the Digital Triptych, we were tasked to use short stories written by Edgar Allen Poe. And while there were many stories that would have given me an easier time to work with. I could not help but be intrigued by the story known as 'The Telltale heart'.

I read the story and used the Three Acts structure to separate it into three acts for my triptych.

The Acts are summarized as follows:

Act 1 - Setup
Once upon a time, there was a person that was mentally unstable, calling himself anything but a madman in some capacity. Everyday, he had the desire, the lust to kill, ever since it came into his brain as he planned to take the life of an old man.

Act 2 - Conflict
One day, when the lust to kill becomes too much, and his plans were complete, he set them into motion and went to the old man’s house. But accidentally alerts him. Because of that, he goes ahead and enacts his plan to kill and pounced on top of him, stabbing him. Because of that too, the neighbour alerts the police causing the murderer to hide the body and successfully covers his crime up.

Act 3 - Resolution
Until finally, overcome with the sense of guilt, grief, and immense feeling to confess, he vocally screams to the police that he was the murderer, the one to commit the crime towards his victim, leading to him revealing the body’s location and giving himself up.

Once I was able to structure my acts, I began to sketch out the story and these were the initial sketches.

I ended up not using these as I felt that they did not fit the pattern a triptych tends to carry in some capacity and decided to re-work my entire sketch to be a bit more simple yet effective.

These were my final sketches as I felt it got the point across fairly effectively and easily.

I then translated it into Illustrator and added some gradients as well as some blood on the second picture.

I added some shadow to emphasize some sort of shading within the piece.

Once that is settled I added a blood background and played around with curves to give the blood background different tones and the like in terms of shading.

Once I added in the colored backdrop as well as the text, I ended up with this as my final piece.
